JUNGLE DRUMS

Rain at last!

At last we’ve had some rain and in just a matter of days our parched Norfolk countryside has been miraculously transformed, into the lush, verdant landscape we expect it to be at this time of year. The rain may have come too late to save the wheat in the field opposite the nursery (and our runner beans), but it looks breathtakingly beautiful with its crop of poppies. And now, at last, we gardeners can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to the serious business of planting.

Feng Shui event
We’d like to let you know of an exciting upcoming event at Urban Jungle.
This is a free event but places are limited and tickets must be booked.

Feng Shui in the Garden
Talk by David R. Walters Dip Chiro.
Consultant
Freeflow Feng Shui

Sunday 31st July at 6pm

David will talk about the fundamentals of Feng Shui (Form) which covers the garden as a whole. The principals in this method are 60% of the puzzle. Illustrating how to work out how balanced your PLOT is and how to make changes. This will also cover CHI, and how we can improve and enhance chi through good planting and whether it needs lifting or slowing down.
David will then talk about the difference between the Early Heaven and Later Heaven sequences of trigrams, (Ba Gua / Pa gua) and what these relate to. Applying both to the home and garden.
The talk will finish with each of the five elements in turn and how to apply these to the garden and to which areas.
We hope you can join us for what promises to be a fascinating talk.

House plants and ‘String Gardens?’

Did you know that we’re stocking an ever-increasing range of plants for house or conservatory? And why grow them in pots when you can tie them and hang them up with string? ‘String Gardening’ is a technique developed by Fedor van de Valk, where he grows plants in balls of soil, wrapped in moss and secured in crocheted string. These are hung in a shady position in the house or garden and watered daily, requiring no more maintenance than a pot plant.
We can’t crochet but we still managed to wrap our balls in string. Now we’ve started we can’t stop and the ideas for plants to wrap and hang with string are flying out of the air at us.

Meet JD
Meet our new house guest JD. He’s a young Jackdaw found by Craig a few weeks ago when planting the Edible Jungle. He was a poorly, injured baby, but looked as though he stood a fighting chance of survival, given some tender loving care. Craig took him home and hand-reared him in his house, and now he’s grown into a handsome but noisy and demanding creature and has been returned to the nursery where he resides in his cage inside the glasshouse (he may be a she for all we know but we’ll call him he for now). He’s still too young to be released but seems to be enjoying life and is getting plenty of attention from visitors to Urban Jungle. There’s a good chance he’ll decide to stay with us and he’ll be very welcome, but we’ll give him the option to move on if and when he’s ready. Jackdaws are extremely intelligent and social birds and he loves being talked to and fussed over. Make sure you say hello if you come by.
