Jungle Drums August 2011

Jungle Drums

August always seems a bitter-sweet month. Autumn is being heralded in the form of subtle changes to leaf colour, and there’s dew on the grass and a chill in the air in the early morning. The nights are drawing in, and the football season has kicked off. However, we often have the warmest and sunniest weather towards the end of August and during September, and exotic gardens are only going to grow bigger, bolder and more colourful during these months. This is an exciting time for exotic plant lovers as our plants are at last beginning the build up to their spectacular late summer crescendo, gaining momentum week on week until the frost knocks them back, or we decide to lift or wrap them. We hope you’re enjoying your garden and not forgetting to use it as a place for peace and relaxation – gardens shouldn’t be all about hard work. Lets hope for a lovely late summer.

The Edible Jungle
Now that we are at last enjoying some warm weather, the ‘Edible Jungle’ is bursting into growth, and the bare soil is beginning to disappear under the foliage of exotic flowers and vegetables. This year we’re charging a small entry fee (£2) to the garden, in aid of charity.

Fancy some volunteering?
If you live locally and have some spare time could you help us? The Edible Jungle, although low maintenance, requires regular deadheading and a little light weeding.

Vertical Garden at the Whalebone
Those of you who visit our Facebook page, or Blog will have seen pictures of the Vertical Garden we planted at the Whalebone Public House in Norwich. It’s looking beautiful.

Libby Ferris
Last year we had a magical evening with Libby who took us into the Edible Jungle and gathered foliage and flowers to demonstrate six beautiful and unusual floral creations.

Kokadama
We’re still String Gardening – it’s addictive. Kokedama translates as ‘moss ball’ and is often referred to as ‘Poor Man’s Bonsai’. Usually grown on a dish, hanging with string is taking the technique one step further. The garden now has more additions, totalling 10 plants in all

Media
We’ve had a mention in the English Garden magazine this month.
And in case you missed it, Bunny Guinness did us proud in the Sunday Telegraph back in March.
