Jungle Drums
| January is the month
for assessing the past year’s highs and lows - the successes, the
also-rans and the unrepeatables. But it’s also a time for
contemplation of the big plans for the coming season. We trust that
you are bursting with enthusiasm for the start of the new gardening
season – we are. And what a start, with so much un-frost-damaged
foliage and so many early flowers in the garden in January. We’re
hoping these are good omens for a bountiful 2012. |

We
can’t have a Newsletter without mentioning the weather. Here in
Norfolk we had an exceptionally mild December. Of course we’re
delighted with these mild temperatures. We moved all our plants
under cover in autumn in preparation for a severe winter and feel
slightly cheated so far, but on balance, we prefer the lack of snow,
frost and ice. And it's only nearly mid-January after all – who knows what the

Plant of the month
Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’
(White Cedar/Thuja Emerald)
There are few evergreen plants that grow into
formal architectural tapering columns without the need for
maintenance and pruning. However, one absolutely brilliant

| January opening times January is our ‘quiet’ month and it gives us a chance to catch up on cleaning the nursery and preparing for the coming season. We also have a chance to re-charge our batteries – perhaps even having two days off in a row – maybe even a weekend - outrageous luxury! So we will be closed for the rest of January. However, if you wish to visit us by appointment please email and we’ll tell you what days we’ll be here and we’ll be more than happy to receive you. And of course we will continue dispatching plants by mail order throughout Jan. We’ll be open every day again from the 1st of February from 10am-5pm. |

New
Gardens for 2012 During January we’ll be spending a good deal of time planning our gardens for planting later in the season. We won’t be re-planting the Edible Jungle with exotics and edibles this year. This garden will be home to our new range of grasses and perennials. We’ll be mixing these with some exotic shrubs such as Phormiums, Cordylines and Yuccas. More |
