AGM Family: Blechnaceae (Ladder fern, Herringbone fern, Hard fern, Deer fern) A handsome, native, evergreen fern with two distinct types of frond. The first are glossy, leathery pinnate up to 60cm long, forming a flattened rosette. These are the fronds that photosynthesise to produce food for the plant. The other type of frond is concerned with reproduction, and held vertically, like a ladder, hence the common name. These are produced late in the season and do not persist throughout the year unlike the evergreen sterile fronds.
Grow in humus rich soil in shade. Acid lover but does well in our neutral soil.
Hardy.
