Architectural rosettes of stiff, lance-shaped, succulent, blue/grey leaves with margins bearing fish hook-like spines and needle-like leaf tips. Agaves are monocarpic and flower once before dying. Agave Americana is called the ‘Century plant’ because it reputedly requires 100 years to reach maturity before flowering, although in reality plants may flower after 40 years and many have done so on the south coast of the UK.
Grow in pure grit and full sun, give winter protection from rain and snow.
Flowering spike may reach 8m.
