(Persian silk tree)
Originating from Iran to Japan
A large deciduous shrub or rounded crowned small tree with enormous leaves up to 45cm long, composed of small, mid-green, fern-like leaflets. Bears dense clusters of powder puff-like flowers made up of numerous, cream/pink, thread-like stamens.
At night and during spells of heavy rain the ranks of little leaflets lift and close, giving the tree another of its common names, ‘The Sleeping tree’.
Albizia julibrissin f. rosea is a fast growing tree but rarely reaches more than 5m in the UK, and its open crown casts only dappled shade, making it suitable for small gardens. As a foliage plant alone it is worthy in any garden but it also produces flowers from a fairly young age; rosea is hardier than the species but requires full sun to flower abundantly.
Grow in poor or moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
