Spike-tipped leathery-skinned leaves, and spiny silver-grey foliage shimmering in the sun, growing alongside dramatic swords and daggers and soft succulent rosettes. Amongst stones and gravel, some species form carpets, while others make tight mounds or sparsely branched trunks bearing compact heads of leaves that afford little shade to the plants below. Dramatic floral displays are loud with few pastel shades; the brilliant daisy-like flowers of Lampranthus make ground-level splashes of intense colour, while towering spikes of yucca or agave flowers are mostly pure white. This is frontier (one could say wild west) style gardening in the UK; the requirements for success are exacting though fairly simple, planting in 70% shingle and even rubble, preferably into a raised bed, so that water can run off, in a south-facing orientation in full sun. If the roots of desert plants are free of wet moisture-retentive soil during the winter their hardiness is greatly increased.
