Coastal

Sun-drenched and exposed, rugged and hardened to the wind, coastal gardens can be characterised by the bright floral displays borne on species more tender than those we can grow inland. Gardens located under the balmy influence of the seaside have a special feel. Tightly ground-hugging succulent foliage carpet through gravel and stones, low and compact mound-forming plants contrast with upright spiky ones, and trees and shrubs with loose and airy crowns, often with silver foliage, make sparse dappled shade and reflect the light as they ceaselessly flutter in the breeze. The sea moderates low winter temperatures, (an effect that gradually diminishes further inland), the light seems brighter, and in shelter from the wind, a balmy micro-climate can be achieved, creating the setting for a huge range of species. Prairie, Mediterranean and desert styles thrive the most in coastal environments, but with careful planning Jungle, Oriental and woodland plants can too.
