The single-minded and uncompromising use of a plant’s attributes, whether in a restrained use, or an abundant style through repetition, is one of the signature looks in this style. ‘Less is more’, is often associated with this mode of gardening, but mass groupings of limited species of plants, perhaps using those with highly distinctive characteristics, can also achieve a modern and sleek look. Structurally laid-out features such as pairs or avenues of plants, like Italian cypresses, topiary, palms, shapely pines, clipped bamboo or Japanese maples look very contemporary. But also, mass plantings of monochrome flowers such as Hydrangea, grasses, or black Iris, work wonderfully. Whether the garden has linear or curving architectural statements, using colour and textural qualities in a minimalist or contrived mass effect, this style takes its cues from buildings and hard landscaping more than others.
