Surrounded by the unfamiliar and exotic, baffled by the strange forms, flowers, scents and colours, one might look from plant to plant searching for the familiar or simply gaze at the range of new and curious apparitions. These are the reactions from those who visit gardens with exceptional collections of species. One unfamiliar specimen might have novelty appeal but a garden filled with them can achieve overpowering originality. When composed creatively, instant wow factor on the first impression is followed by continuing wonder, as the detail of each specimen is discovered. We have assigned plants to this category based on what it is possible to grow outdoors in the UK climate, or in a moderately heated conservatory. They are chosen from the global palette, without consideration for the ease of production. Many of these plants are uncommon because they are tricky to propagate, and cuttings or seeds may be difficult to source, but our mission is to increase our own collections of these species in order to produce them for our customers. Our display gardens and those of some of our generous customers are a valuable source of material, and we hope to increase our range and numbers of plants available season by season.
