Woodland

In the cool and dappled shade, the humid and sheltered atmosphere of an all-encompassing group of plants can create a secret escape where a gardener’s creativity can run riot. Enclosing species could be native trees, bamboo, Eucalyptus, or even Cordylines and palms. Once inside the enveloping shelter, a huge range of plants can benefit from the micro-climate, allowing you to create effects similar to the jungle or oriental styles, depending on the depth of the shade you have created. Plants can occupy all levels; from a carpet of moss, lichen and ferns on the ground, to perennials such as Hostas, Soloman’s seal, or lily of the valley, Bromeliads on the trunks of other plants, shrubs, and medium-sized bamboo and trees such as Acers, and then the towering species. Perhaps counter-intuitively, this style can translate well into urban gardens, using the micro-climate created by surrounding buildings. Even tiny gardens can utilise the upright habit of many species we have included in this group – not just to create the enclosure but to screen out the man-made environment, and create an oasis of therapeutic wilderness in the midst of it.
