(Snake bark maple)
  (Award of Garden Merit)

Family Sapindaceae
Originating from China

A deciduous tree with a wide spreading crown of dark glossy, green, veined leaves held on red stalks. This is an elegant tree for foliage alone, the leaves being much larger than the species, but of course, the snake bark maple is renowned for its beautiful and remarkable bark and should be planted near a path to enable those passing to get up close and personal.
In young trees the bark is a lustrous red/purple, maturing to green with snake-skin-like cream stripes.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun/part shade. Does not do well on very chalky soil.
Height 8m.
Spread 6m.
