(Tree of heaven)
Family Simaroubaceae
Originating from China

A large, fast-growing deciduous tree with smooth grey bark, fissured with age, and large, arching leaves composed of lance-shaped leaflets.
A beautiful tree for a large garden, but will become more architectural, and is more suitable for a small garden if pollarded in spring, much like a Paulownia, cutting almost to the ground and allowing only one shoot to develop. Treated this way it will produce massive leaves up to 130cm long, almost palm-like in appearance. These turn golden in autumn.
An aggressive invader in some countries, Ailanthus has grown in the UK since 1750 and has proved unproblematic. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun/partial shade. Will tolerate poor soil.
