A magnificent biennial or short lived perennial from the mountains of Japan and Korea. The cow parsley-like leaves are deeply divided, glossy and exotic.
In June monstrous, inflated beetroot red sheathed flowering heads appear on red tinted stems and open into large, rounded umbels of purple flowers -truly dramatic and loved by bees. The roots are used in herbal medicine to treat anaemia and as an aphrodisiac!
Grow in moist soil in sun or dappled shade.
