Many fancy crested cultivars of this native fern exist, but the simple, clean lines of native Asplenium scolopendrium, with whole, undivided leaves is still the best.
The evergreen shuttlecock-like crowns of bright green, strap-shaped, lush, leathery fronds, with wavy margins brighten the garden in winter. It spreads by creeping rhizomes and can create great drifts. Plants benefit from a tidy in spring - cut off any dead leaves before the new ones emerge.
Grow in shade. Prefers alkaline, chalky soils but will tolerate slightly acid soils.
