This handsome, deciduous tree has new leaves in spring emerging almost black, opening to purple and gradually becoming green later in the season. The leaf stalks remain dark purple. This tree is grown for it's splendid colour and very large leaves up to 40cm long but also for its extremely showy panicles of white flowers with yellow and black markings followed by large, runner bean-like seed pods. This tree takes well to pollarding annually and will produce massive leaves.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun.
