Originating from Turkey
A recent introduction, this beautifully bizarre deciduous shrub has twisted and curled branches. Spring leaves emerge a brilliant red, maturing to deep wine red before becoming green later in summer, although new growth continues on the red theme. In winter the contortion of stems is highly ornamental, especially combined with the abundance of pinky coloured catkins, produced in autumn, giving all year round interest. The stems are valued for flower arranging. These shrubs are grafted so any growth from below the root stock needs to be removed.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in part shade.
