£8.99 Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' - 2Ltr
(Award of Garden Merit) Family Anacardiaceae
Originating from Southern Europe to China
Panicles of, pink/purple flowers appear in late summer and are produced in such abundance that the tree becomes totally enveloped in a frothy floral haze, earning it its common name, 'Smoke bush'. The shape of the leaves of this dramatic plant are oval and quite small, about 6cm and pollarding (cutting branches back to two or three buds) will produce a luxuriant mass of larger leaves at the expense of flowers, as will a very rich soil. In autumn, they develop a pink outer margin before the whole leaf turns brilliant flame orange/red. Plants benefit from pruning after flowering to prevent them from becoming leggy.
Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil in sun or part shade.
Can be pruned to restrict growth.
