(Award of Garden Merit)
Originating from South Africa
Bulbous perennial with long, strap-shaped leaves, a green and black mottled stem (though sometimes this is plain green) bearing a large raceme, up to 20cm long, of star-shaped, pale green and purple flowers with a tuft of leaves on top resembling a pineapple. The flowers appear in midsummer, lasting until early autumn, followed by an interesting seed head, which lasts, along with the leaves until the first frosts. Don't be surprised by the somewhat cabbagy smell.
Grow in fertile soil with good drainage in full sun. In frost prone areas cover with a winter mulch of straw or bracken.
