Originating from China
An essential tree for the exotic garden, Magnolia delavayi is an exceptionally large leaved, evergreen forming a small, spreading, flat topped shrubby tree in milder parts of the UK, with huge, lemon-scented, creamy white flowers in late summer. The glaucous, coarse, leathery leaves can reach quite enormous proportions, between 30 to 36cm in length, oblong in shape and are one of the distinguishing features of this Magnolia. The flowers, albeit short-lived are nonetheless spectacular and deliciously scented. They are bowl-shaped, up to 20cm across with thick, creamy petals, followed by a cone-like fruit. Rare and very choice.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in part shade. Will tolerate some lime in soil. In gardens prone to severe frost it is best grown against a wall.
