Originating from West China
One of the finest flowering evergreen shrubs, especially valuable as it flowers are produced in early winter (Nov/Dec) when there is so little other flower colour in the garden. Not only are the erect racemes of golden yellow flowers exceptionally showy but incredibly fragrant too. These are long lasting and followed by purple grape-like berries. Its habit is upright and the rosettes of leaves - each leaf up to 45cm long, are covered in sharply toothed, holly-like, dark green leaflets.
A choice architectural plant for a shady border, it also makes a very handsome hedge and is nasty enough to deter any intruder. Mahonia 'Charity' grows best in shade and can look chlorotic in sun.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun/part shade.
Height 5m. Spread 4m.
