(Common medlar, Dutch medlar)
Family Rosaceae
Originating from S.E. Europe, S.W. Asia

Medlar trees are always interesting, often picturesque in habit. They absolutely refuse to grow straight, growing short and usually crooked with a wide spreading canopy of dark green leaves, and pink-tinged flowers in late spring and early summer.
The fruits resemble giant dusty brown rose hips, are edible but very much an acquired taste. They are best left on the tree until after a good frost to be 'bletted' (allowed to semi-rot) before being eaten. The taste can be described as acidic sorbet.
Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun.

Eventual mature plant size :
Height 6m
