(The royal fern)
  (Award of Garden Merit)

Family Osmundaceae
Originating from America, Europe and Asia

This most regal of ferns gains its common name from its being one of the largest and most distinctive European ferns. It forms colonies of enormous, upright fronds on fibrous rhizomes. These rhizomes can resemble trunks of short tree ferns, rising 20cm above ground, and it is the fibre from these that is used as a growing medium for orchids.
Osmunda regalis is a colourful fern - new fronds unfurl with a hint of pink, becoming apple green, turning copper in autumn. During the growing season it produces russet fertile, spore-bearing fronds. Given plenty of space it makes a stunning, architectural feature.
Grow in sun or shade in moist soil.
