Originating from Canary Islands, Portugal and Greece

An attractive little evergreen tree or shrub with leathery, glossy, aromatic dark green leaves and small red flowers in summer. Its dense habit makes it ideal for topiary and is popular with bonsai enthusiasts. Its common name refers to the sweet resin produced when incisions are made in the bark. It can be chewed like gum and was popular with roman children - its mild antiseptic properties no doubt helped fight tooth decay.
