An attractive little evergreen tree or shrub with leathery, glossy, aromatic dark green leaves and small red flowers in summer. Its dense habit makes it ideal for topiary and is popular with bonsai enthusiasts. Its common name refers to the sweet resin produced when incisions are made in the bark. It can be chewed like gum and was popular with roman children - its mild antiseptic properties no doubt helped fight tooth decay.
Pistacia lentiscus is not fully hardy but survives in milder areas with the protection of a wall. In very cold gardens take under cover in winter.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun.
