Family fagaceae
Originating from Northern Mexico

A rare evergreen oak with large, glossy, leathery leaves that resemble those of Eriobotrya japonica. New leaves emerge bright burgundy red in spring and the tree may have a second flush later in summer. They can measure up to 25cm in length and have a wonderfully corrugated texture.
Although fast-growing the mature height is only 5m making it an outstanding specimen for a small garden.
This is a new introduction and although most information dictates that it should be planted in a sheltered site, specimens in the USA have withstood winters where temperatures have dropped to -23 degrees centigrade.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun. Very drought tolerant once established.

Eventual mature plant size :
Height 5m
Spread 4m
