Evergreen tree with superb grey bark, shredding in large longitudinal strips to reveal white, sometimes pinked tinged bark beneath. Glaucous leaves smelling of peppermint when crushed are rounded/heart shaped when juvenile. The adult leaves are lanceolate, terminating in a little crimson hook. Bears umbels of creamy white flowers in summer.
Eucalyptus coccifera may be grown as an evergreen hedge.
Grow in fertile, moist soil in sun. From high altitudes of Tasmania where it withstands extremely harsh conditions, it has been cultivated since 1840 in the UK and is very hardy.
Eucalyptus should not be staked and they should be planted in full sun.
