A xerophytic, deciduous shrub that will grow in the hottest driest soil, or even from a rocky crevice. Long pendulous panicles of scented, pale lilac flowers appear on the old wood in April, before the leaves, and provide an early source of nectar for bees. The leaves are generously sized and are so covered in hair they appear almost white in the early part of summer, as do the stems.
Grow in poor dry soil in full sun.
Prune hard after flowering for a smaller, more compact plant.
