 Probably the most beautiful of the Redbuds, 'Avondale' is a compact shrub or small tree producing an abundance of dark purple flowers buds, opening to cerise pink flowers, clustered on the bare trunk and branches in April/May, before the leaves appear. The large, heart shaped leaves are another fine feature - rich green and glossy in summer, maturing to a rich golden yellow in autumn.
Prune hard after flowering to maintain as a small, dense shrub and for the largest, luxuriant leaves. Grow in moist but well-drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade.
