A dense upright evergreen shrub or small tree with leathery, glossy dark green leaves, flushed red when young, arranged in whorls around claret red shoots. In late spring it bears clusters of fragrant creamy white flowers followed by small, spherical black fruits, which can be used as a pepper substitute.
This makes a super, colourful little tree for a small garden and gives all year interest. Mature plants develop a charming gnarled character. Although it has a reputation for being slightly tender most plants in reasonably sheltered gardens survived winter 2010/11.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun/part shade.

Eventual mature plant size :
Height 4m

Spread 2.5m
