(Kentucky Coffee tree)
Family Caesalpiniaceae
Originating from North America

A beautiful, elegant, deciduous tree with large pinnate leaves up to 1m long. The young leaflets are pink-tinged and softly hairy when young. In early winter the tree has an unusual appearance due to the leaf stalks remaining on the branches after leaf drop. In winter, the tree has a unique appearance, as after leaf fall the bare branches are exposed and are thick and rough. Incidentally the timber is remarkably heavy. A neighbour brought us a lump from a recently felled tree - it felt like a lead weight.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun.

Eventual mature plant size :
Height 16m

Spread 12m
