An evergreen trailing shrub which can be trained as a climber with small, dark green leaves and scarlet flowers from June, through to autumn. The leaves are leathery and glossy and the flowers are about 3cm in length and variously described as bottle or mitre shaped. Look closely and they resemble a red velvet dress on a curvaceous body. These really are a most startling red in colour and as Mitraria prefers to grow in the shade, it can add dramatic colour to a woodland garden, shady wall or border. We have them planted under trees with other shade lovers and when in flower they're amazing attention grabbers.
This is a versatile little shrub and can either be allowed to scramble along the ground where it acts as ground cover or, if planted against a wall, it will send out long shoots that can be trained to wires. It can even be used in a hanging container and will trail down a metre or so.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in shade. Will tolerate some lime in the soil but will grow more strongly in an acidic soil.
