Originating from China
Perhaps the most well-known and popular bamboo. Pink-tinged shoots emerge in late spring, turning to green culms. These turn a lustrous black the following season. Good light will enhance the colouration and on very black stems the culm sheath scars will appear as almost white, horizontal bands.
It is usually a well-behaved bamboo, of a tidy, upright habit with a profusion of foliage. To enhance the appearance of the canes it is necessary to prune weak growth and lower leaves and branches and ensure the plant receives good light.
Looks good anywhere. Excellent in pots if well fed and watered. If pruned well it is wonderful in modern plantings and against pale coloured walls. Makes a good hedge.
