Fizzy fermenting foodie fun
At Urban Jungle we are blessed to have an incredibly diverse Kitchen Garden that provides us with excellent produce throughout the year. And, as part of the Cacti and Chilli Festival week, we'll be celebrating our fiery little favourite. Over 40 varieties have been sown this year, and they're coming along beautifully.
These antiquated ‘cooking’ methods are a way for us to honour our forbearers, reduce our need
for modern preservatives and enhance the joy of our meals. We want to share with you our harvests, thoughts and musings, and our love of food.
Make a space in your diaries on Thursday 30th August and join us in the Jungle for a night of pickling, mezze and mangal.
We'll begin the night with a home-made shrub cordial and a practical workshop. The session is hands-on and fun, and covers the basics of these timeless techniques including:
What pickling is, why it works, and how to do it
How to choose your ingredients and find creative expression through pickles!
The health and ecological benefits
A (very brief) introduction to fermentation and how to make the best sauerkraut you’ve had yet
Everyone will make a jar of bespoke chilli sauce and a jar of fresh sauerkraut to take home.
We'll also wheel out our own pickles, ferments and breads to snack on as we work.
You'll also recieve some information on making your favourite pickles and ferments at home.
Once we’ve got our jars packed and sealed, Chef Chloe will treat us all to a family style spread of home-made mezze and pickles, grilled and smoky meats and vegetables, with plenty of flatbreads to mop up.
The workshop begins at 6:30pm.
Tickets are 50pp to include arrival drink, workshop, your chilli sauce and sauerkraut, and dinner.
