Originating from Mediterranean region
An evergreen oak famous for its thick, knobbly, corky bark, that distinguishes it from all other oaks. Its leaves are long with spiny ends, quite different from our native deciduous oak and it is much shorter in stature with low twisted branches. In Portugal these are the trees cultivated for the cork of every day use - the trees are stripped of the bark every 10 to 12 years. In the UK these trees have been grown for many years as ornamentals - our summers are too cool and growth too slow to make cork production commercially viable. A lovely tree giving all year interest.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun.
Suitable for topiary and restrictive pruning.
