(Award of Garden Merit) Family Arecaceae
Originating from N Myanmar to C China
It is an extremely attractive and compact palm with a slim trunk, covered in fibres, which can be stripped revealing a smooth, ringed surface. It looks equally attractive left, as nature intended with its woolly coat left intact. It is satisfyingly fast growing, and happy, well-fed individuals can grow a whopping 30cm of trunk a year.
The leaves are circular, fan-shaped, deeply divided, sometimes held erectly or sometimes drooping at the tips, and up to 1.2m in diameter. In summer it erupts into flower producing huge, drooping yellow panicles from the trunk followed by, on female plants, grey/black fruits. It is not uncommon for Trachycarpus seed to germinate and produce offspring. Look out for seedling palms around the base of the plant.
Trachycarpus prefers a moist but well-drained, fertile soil in shade or part shade.
