(Award of Garden Merit) Family Asparagaceae
Originating from Southeast USA
The flower spike emerges very late in the year, often as late as November and sometimes, early frosts will stop it in its tracks, otherwise, given a chance to bloom, the flowers are large, creamy/white, and pendulous.
This is a plant that needs to be grown in the ground to reach its full potential - it sulks in a pot. Once it has its roots established in the soil it is an incredibly striking sight. It has been cultivated for several centuries in England. Yucca gloriosa has many uses and fibre from the leaves can be used for basket weaving or papermaking.
An extremely hardy species, tolerating a wide range of conditions and most soils. Prefers full sun.
