Originating from South Africa
A clump-forming perennial, evergreen in mild UK winters, forming a mound of huge, overlapping, upright, glossy, bright green leaves up to 80cm long and large green and cream flowering spathes. It almost has the stature of an Alocasia (elephant' ears), to which it is related, but has the advantage of being hardy in virtually all parts of the UK.
Grow in moist, fertile soil in sun/part shade. May be grown as a pond marginal. Also a superb plant for a shady conservatory and the flowers are long lasting in a vase. It is advisable to cover the crown of the plant with a mulch in winter.
