Family Pinaceae
Originating from SW USA
The downward sweeping branches of this elegant conifer are covered in silver upswept needles, and in spring they bear small red cone-like male flowers, followed by rich purple large female cones held upright on the branches. Can be trained to form a wide spreading shrub with a ‘life size’ bonsai character if selected terminal shoots are pruned. Rarely seen today due to the small numbers of growers grafting plants in the UK, this plant is from artisan Dutch growers, and this specimen is probably 10 – 12 years old already. Tolerant of a wide range of soil types and easy to grow, preferring full sun.
Height and spread after 10 years 4m x 2m
Mature height and spread after 20 years if not pruned 6m x3m.
