Family Agapanthaceae
Originating from South Africa
Agapanthus africanus ‘Albus’ is an enchanting cultivar of the blue flowering species with evergreen long, strap-shaped leaves and short, thick, fleshy stems bearing spectacular umbels of pure white flowers, followed by hanging, waxy, capsules, becoming papery and revealing black seeds.
Despite being a native of South Africa, with a warm and sunny climate, it does surprisingly well outdoors in milder parts of the UK although leaves may be damaged by frost.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or in containers. Water well in summer.
Approximate height and spread after 2 years 1.2m x 90cm
