Urban Jungle’s 3L Akebia Quinata ‘Chocolate Vine’ plants are elegant, fast-growing, semi-evergreen (evergreen in mild winters), twining climbers with leaves composed of five bright blue/green, purple tinged leaflets, producing spicily scented racemes of waxy, dark chocolate/purple flowers in spring followed by thick greyish/purple, sausage-like edible fruits, which dangle bizarrely from the vine. These are ripe and ready to eat when their skins begin to split. The edible portion of the fruit is the sweet but subtle tasting white pulp inside the skin, tasting vaguely of melon. Lemon juice can be added to intensify the flavour.
Of ornamental and edible value, Akebia will scramble and twine along wires on a wall, fence or pergola or scramble through an old tree. . For best fruit grow in full sun in a sheltered position. Akebias are easy to grow and do not require pruning, however it may be necessary to plant two specimens to enable cross pollination for fruit production.
Grow in moist but well-drained soil in sun or part shade.
