Description

(stag-horn cactus)
Family Asphodelaceae
Originating from Southern Africa

Long, tapering, recurved, fleshy, grey/green, conspicuously toothed leaves up to 60cm arranged in rosettes. Long flowering stems arise from these rosettes during summer/autumn bearing pokers of coral red, tubular flowers that are attractive to bees.
Although commonly called the ‘stag-horn cactus’, Aloe arborescens is a succulent herbaceous perennial. The common name refers to its multi-branching habit. Like Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera), it has healing properties and is used by indigenous people as a treatment for burns and abrasions.
Grow in gritty, well-drained compost in sun/part shade.
Will survive to possibly -5 degrees centigrade if dry although outdoor cultivation is not recommended in the UK.
