Family Araliaceae.
Originating from E. Asia.
A large deciduous shrub with elegant poise and stunningly detailed leaf structure, with bold colouration and a big floral display. The large feather-shaped (bipinnate) leaves have striking white markings in summer, turning pink and then red in the autumn. There are few plants that can match this species impact if it is given plenty of room for its form to achieve its gracefully branched natural habit, holding its abundant, stiffly downswept leaves in a graceful wide spreading form. Growing vigorously and with minimal fuss, it will make a large shrub with a many faceted display in just a few years, slowing its growth rate a little as it matures to become a small tree.
The large flower panicles are creamy white and have the same colour progression as the foliage, becoming a lovely shade of burgundy/pink as the starry flowers that appear as a frothy mass on the branched inflorescences, produce their black berries. They appear in mid summer and generally fall after the leaves in late autumn. Best grown in its own space, in dappled shade, where its bright white variegation can stand out, it is easy to grow in moisture retentive woodland soil. Remove any plain green growth from the base of the plant, emerging from below the graft.
Semi mature height and spread after 4 – 5 years 2m x 2.5m.
Height and spread after 8 – 10 years 4m x 4m.
