The Featherleaf Rodgersia in Your Garden

Dramatic and refined, its bold foliage makes a showy appearance in spring with bronzy tones and departs in a blaze of colour. In summer, its size and wonderfully textured palmate leaves create a lush, impressive effect. Forming an abundant clump, they set the stage for an airy, eye-catching summer floral display and autumn seed spikes.

Rodgersia pinnata is hardy in all but the coldest, exposed UK gardens. It grows to around 1–1.5m tall and wide, thriving in cool, damp conditions. A perfect species for jungle and woodland gardens in Norfolk, it is one of the best understory architectural shade perennials. Given moisture at its roots, it grows well in full sun, perfect for Suffolk’s bog, pond, or stream-side gardens.

In summer, upright plumes of creamy white, pink-tinted flowers appear held above the foliage on stout stems. Bees, hoverflies and butterflies flock to their nectar-laden blooms in a feeding frenzy. Brightly coloured red seeds follow the flowers, extending the plant’s display into autumn.

Growing Tips for Your Architectural Shade Perennial, Rodgersia pinnata.

  • Soil and sun: For maximum lushness, moist or boggy soil in part shade or deep shade is ideal. It grows well in full sun with moisture at the roots, and even in drier conditions, but with smaller leaves.
  • Planting: At any time of the year. Keep the crown at soil level. Never plant a dry plant! Plunge for 10 minutes to drench the root ball before planting.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.
  • Pruning: Cut back dead foliage in late autumn or early spring.

With its exuberant foliage and lush, large, clump-forming habit, this showy, architectural shade perennial is an ideal jungle garden plant. However, its refined, not overtly exotic nature makes it suitable for traditional English woodland gardens. From the emergence of its colourful foliage, one of the highlights of spring, its display lasts through to early winter.
