Big and bold, yet soft and feathery, intricately detailed and striking (more elegant than a goat’s beard), the dense mass of feather-shaped, handsome rich green herbaceous leaves is borne on tall stems with many brush-like branches. Forming a thicket-like large shrub, the individual leaflets can vary greatly in size, especially large when grown in part shade, making a valuable contribution to jungle-style gardens and looking great in traditional woodland styles.

Its white flowers are borne on branched inflorescences carrying hundreds of tiny individual flowers which attract all pollinators. They have a stunning plume-like shape, making an impact from afar and appearing beautiful up close, where the tassel-like side branches of the flower structures can be seen supporting the masses of starry-looking blooms, each bearing many filamentous stamens.

Particularly lush and effective when planted in dappled shade, where its bright flower colour is most conspicuous, Goat’s Beard is a vigorous perennial. It’s easy to grow in all but heavy wet soils, in full sun or part shade.
