Family Solanaceae
Originating from Brazil
An exotic shrub or small tree with a profusion of sweetly fragrant White, trumpet-shaped flowers up to 30cm long, produced in successions throughout the year, even in the depths of winter in a cool conservatory or greenhouse. Their perfume is particularly fragrant in the evening.
Also known as Datura this is the plant used in Shamanism as a hallucinogen. It is highly toxic and must not be ingested but we have it good faith that falling asleep next to the flowers results in ‘interesting’ dreams.
Brugmansias may be placed outdoors in summer but require a frost-free conservatory or greenhouse in winter. They require copious amounts of water and feed during the growing season. Although they are usually cultivated in a pot, they do not resent root disturbance and may be planted in the ground in summer and lifted in late autumn – even large specimens.
Height and spread after 1 – 2 years 1.5m x 1.5m
Semi-mature height and spread after 3 – 4 years if not pruned 3m x 2m
