Description

Family Scrophulariaceae
Originating from Himalaya

A large and dense shrub with big grey/green deciduous leaves borne in profusion, giving the plant a lush and abundant look. The new growth forms vigorous arching shoots covered in downy wool which is red-brown colour. The flowers are formed at the ends of these in early summer over a long period, sometimes followed by sporadic later flowering. It has one of the largest flowers of all Buddlejas, deep mauve in colour with white and pink shades in the base of each tubular flower. It was described as one of the handsomest in the Himalayas by its discoverer Sir Joseph Hooker. The overall effect of the deep pink flowers and foliage looks great in an exotic style or woodland planting.
Although it is a vigorous grower that may appear sprawling, it responds well to shaping if pruned immediately after flowering. It will thrive in most soils but does best in a little shelter in full sun or part shade.

Height and spread after 4 – 5 years 2m x 2m
Semi mature height and spread after 10 – 12 years if not pruned 6m x 5m
