Description

Family Myrtaceae
Originating from Australia

  • A stunning soft bottlebrush with weeping branches and slender dark evergreen leaves.
  • Deep and lustrous red flowers are borne in profusion in summer.
  • Easy to grow in full sun in any soil.

We are excited to introduce this rare bottlebrush variety to you. It was acquired from a collector who understood that we would propagate it, ensuring its preservation within UK horticulture. We have successfully nurtured new generations of this variety and are pleased to be the sole UK stockist (according to the RHS Plantfinder), making this unique specimen available to our customers.

Its graceful branches cascade toward the ground and are densely covered with soft, narrow, dark green leaves, they are pointed at the tips and held firmly on the branches, upright and clustered around the shoots at their tips. Further down the branches the leaves gradually assume a more horizontal orientation. The leaves are aromatic, as is the entire plant, and their evergreen richness in colour ensures a splendid display throughout the year. It establishes a robust branching structure quickly. If desired, the plant can be pruned back hard to this structure to maintain compactness. Alternatively, when left to grow naturally, it forms long tassel-like branches, creating a fantastic spectacle of abundant fountain-like growth.

The midsummer display of uniquely dark red flowers, adored by pollinators, imparts an opulent appearance to this variety. The central upright branches bear the flowers vertically, while the broad, arching older stems present them horizontally and pendulously. This arrangement generates an explosive haze of deep red blooms. The flowers are crowned by red-tinted soft and silky new leaves as the fresh growth continues to extend beyond the blossoms. Beneath them, seed pods from the previous season, characterized by a tough and woody oval shape, remain firmly attached to the branches, awaiting a bushfire to trigger germination. Occasional late-season flushes of flowers can occur during hot periods.

Its dark and rich flower color, unique among Callistemons, combined with its small size and soft habit, make it an ideal specimen for planting amongst spiky and taller architectural species. This placement allows for contrast in Mediterranean, gravel, and coastal gardens. It thrives in full sun, in any soil, even heavy and wet types, and grows well in pots.

Height and spread after 5 – 10 years 1.5m x 1.5m.
