(Red trumpet vine)
Family Bignoniaceae
Originating from S.E. USA
A vigorous deciduous climber, developing a trunk-like main stem with very attractive toothed, ovate leaves composed of dark green leaflets, emerald green when young, and clusters of trumpet-shaped orange/red flowers in summer. One of the most beautiful and tropical-looking climbers that are hardy in the uk.
Because of its vigour it’s important to ensure this climber is planted against very firm support. Initially it may be necessary to tie in the first few stems, but Campsis produce aerial roots, like ivy, and will self cling to a wall or fence or even an old tree. Prune hard in spring cutting back to 3 or 4 buds from the main stem.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun. In milder areas it is possible to grow Campsis ‘Flamenco’ in the open, for example over an arbour but in colder areas it does better against a fence or wall.
