Description

Family Cannaceae
Originating from S. America and Asia.

  • Huge perennial grey/green are leaves borne on tall thick stems forming a dense clump.
  • Pink-tinted orange flowers are borne at the tips of the stems lasting for many weeks from mid summer until autumn
  • Easy to grow in rich soil in full sun. Protect rhizomes for winter with a layer of straw.

An epic canna, a giant of the family, with amazing vigour and towering stems, bearing huge grey/green banana-like leaves. Orange, pink-tinted flowers held in elegant spikes are produced amongst and above the highest foliage. This exceptionally rare plant is often described as growing only to 1.5 – 2m, whereas our own stock attains 3m tall, growing from thick, spreading rhizomes. Grow in full sun or part shade in rich soil, preferably improved with horse manure, or even as a pond marginal. Protect the rhizomes with a layer of straw, or lift for winter.

Height and spread after 2 – 5 years 2.5m x 2m.
