Family Cannaceae
Garden origin
- Large fleshy banana-like foliage is a nearly black shade of purple.
- Big blousy orange flowers appear over a long period from midsummer.
- Easy to grow in fertile soil in full sun.
Dark, luscious, abundant foliage dramatically contrasts with the fiery orange/red flowers of this delicious canna. The large fleshy foliage is nearly black with dusky purple/green hues, growing on stout upright stems, bearing at their tips the big flamboyant multitudinous blooms in spikes of buds that produce a succession of flowers for many weeks in summer. Cannas love rich fertile soil, to which we say horse poo! Lots of it too. Nothing like it to enrich and improve the soil structure to make canna heaven. Easy to grow in full sun, mulch with manure to protect the rhizomes for winter.
Height and spread after 2 – 5 years 1.5m x 1m.
